Greece – Mainland arrival
Greece – Mainland arrival
Day 32 Sunday 17th September 2023 - Mykonos - Rafina

Today is a travel day leaving the Cyclades Islands for the Greek mainland. After being awoken by noisy neighbours returning from a long night in the town, we then had broken sleep until we got up at 8:00. We had a transfer to the port booked for 10:45 for the 12:00 ferry to Rafina. We had a coffee at the cafe next to our hotel while we were waiting, actually we had two, cost 20€ ($33.50 or $8.37 each). Combined with our port transfer fee of 35€, we had spent nearly $100AUD before the day had begun !! The joys of travelling !

Our ferry had been sitting in port overnight, so when we arrived at the port, we were able to board immediately, very relaxed and no hassle.

The trip took us 5 hours, with 3 stops at other islands on the way. The first stop was insane, with about 300 extra passengers boarding and soon crowding out the available spaces on board. At one stage, the whole ferry shuddered and a rather loud noise that sounded and felt like we had hit something in the ocean ... like a whale, or shipping container, or another vessel. Immediately the TV monitors were showing the life jacket and raft demonstration but no actual explanation was given as to the incident. The passengers were very tense for quite a few minutes with many instantly making phone calls possibly to loved ones...if only we could understand what they were saying !! We all remained seated and as the crew didn't look too perturbed, the trip continued on as per normal.

Anyway, we arrived at Rafina on the mainland around 17:10, about 30 minutes overdue. It was a 16 minute walk to our apartment, the last 100 metres up a steep hill, and then we were in for the night after a quick shop at the nearby Lidl.

It is all Greek to me. If only you had paid more attention at school, Graeme.

All’s well that ends well, but I imagine it might have been a bit unsettling all the same.
