Monday 17th August 2015 - Flight to Spain
After a long flight we arrived relatively relaxed and eager to get out and explore Barcelona except for one fact .. during our transfer in Dubai, I somehow lost our phone !! So a relaxing 3 hour stopover in Dubai airport turned into a frantic triple search of all our hand luggage - no phone - so then the rounds of retracing our steps - right back to the other terminal through security etc. etc. Reported lost phone to a number of counters and no one had one handed in. We resigned ourselves to the fact it was gone, so on the way to Barcelona using the A380 wi-fi I was able to contact the phone company - Truphone and put a bar on the sim. We had an automatic top up feature installed and we imaged someone was running up a huge phone bill on us !!

Anyway long story short, Emirates contacted me the next day to say they had located my phone and it was sent to Barcelona airport and I will pick it up on Thursday.

Monday 18th August 2015 - Barcelona
First impressions- what a great city !! Loved the architecture, weather, people and felt comfortable right from the start. We got the Aerobus from the airport right to Placa Catalunya, and walked to our apartment from there. Alright it took a while to locate the apartment, and after lugging our cases up 5 flights of stairs (106 steps !!!) we were exhausted. But the apartment is fantastically well located within easy walk to the centre of the city and most attractions.

Wednesday20th August 2015 - Barcelona
We picked:
  • La Sagrada Familia
  • Museu d'Història de Catalunya
  • Poble Espanyol

During the evening we had tapas and sangria at Placa Rieal, followed by some paella and more sangria at another little cafe not far from our apartment.

Thursday 21st August 2015 - Barcelona
Early rise, breakfast and off to La Sagrada Familia - we have booked a skip the line tour - when we went past yesterday the number of tourists there was staggering - so we took the sensible option and made sure we could get in without the line up. We are booked for 9.15am.
Friday 21st August 2015 - Madrid - start of Trafalgar Tour
Today was our skip the lione tour of La Sagrada Famlia - WOW ! 4 hours spent wandering and admiring this cathdral - truly amazing. Meet a French TGV driver in the park while having lunch and he suggested we visit Moserat - so we did. Took a rack rail train ip the mountain to the monastery arriving at 4.30 pm.

Back at our AirBnB we packed as much as we could - leaving for Madrid by train.

Saturday 22nd August 2015 - Madrid - start of Trafalgar Tour
We caught the fast train from Barcelona to Madrid travelling over 305 km/hr...so smooth a trip.

Madrid - what a regal city compared to Barcelona - much more formal and grand. The buildings there including the Royal Palace, post office and other places around just gave the city a completely different feel.

Sunday 23rd August 2015 - Segovia
After a great breakfast at our hotel, we had a tour of Madrid, a city which has some majestic buildings, but showing signs of the tragic civil war of the 1930's.

After lunch we took the optional tour to Segovia - WOW again - mainly because of the Roman acquaduct that still stands in the centre of town. This is the best preserved in all of Europe. Also visited the Alcazar castle.

Sunday is a free entry day to the Prada museum, so we were dropped off there to visit at our leisure. Tania and I decided we liked sculptures better thanpaintings !

Monday 24th August 2015 - Toledo
Left Madrid heading toward Granada, visting Toledo on the way. Holy Toledo - an old walled city steeped in history and was the capital of Spain for a brief time in history. A very religous ccity where Jews. Christians and Muslims all lived in harmony .. again for a breif time in history !
So much history here, an ancient walled city with some buildings dated back to 900 ad. Great stop !

Tuesday 25th August 2015 - Granada - Alhambra
Early start (7.00am) to head out to Alhambra, just out of town. This was the last fortress in Spain of the Moors (Muslims) before they were driven from Spain after 800 years of rule from 711 - 1492. This palace was built in the 13th century and has been largely preserved in tact - well parts of it as well. Pretty impressive and lots of history again.

A natural water supply is channelled into the walled city for gardens, fountains and baths. IT comes from mountain springs.

From here we continued onto our next stop, Marbella, arriving at 3.00 pm. Booked into accommodation and then took an afternoon drive up into the mountains to visit Mijas. A hillside village overlooking Costa del Sol, with donkey taxis, bull ring and views over to Gilbraltar and Africa.

Wednesday 26th August 2015 - Morocco - Fes
Another early morning start as we needed to make sure we were at the ferry terminal in time to catch it over to Tangier, Morocco. IT was smooth crossing and a long travel day to get to Fes. In Morocco with a local travel guide join, Abdulis. Moroco was suprisingly very agricultural, but backward in machinery and equipemnt to work the land.
Thursday 27th August 2015 - Fes

Another WOW moment seeing 9th century walled palace and medina (market) - literally walking back in time for 500 years in the medina to see how people actually spend their day to day life .. wow ! We had 2 extra guides to help us navigate the maze of lanes and markets without getting lost !Visited carpet and leather shops, unfortunately the leather dying vats were empty and being refurbished.

This afternoon, Graeme took an optional tour to Meknes, the original capital since the 17th century.

Friday 28th August 2015 - Marakech

A long day on the road from Fes to Marrakesh ! Amazed again at the amount of arable land in Morocco and the amount of agriculture. Passed through villages with meat carcasses hanging outside the shops in the open medina (it was 30 plus degrees). Arrived in Marrakesh and went for a walk through their medina and had a great dinner with entertainment at a traditional Moroccan restaurant followed by a romantic ride home in a horse and carriage.

Next day visited a home in a mountainside Berber village and was treated to home made mint tea, bread, butter and honey- YUM ! Then visited Bahia Palace in the afternoon.

On the way to Casablanca we watched to movie on the bus - yes it was a long drive and an early morning, 7.30 am start. Casablanca is the economic and industrial centre of Morocco and is very 'westernised' ! Also, location to the largest mosque in Morocco. We had a mandatory stop at Rick's Cafe !!
We drove onto to Rabat, the political capital of Morocco visiting the tomb of ?? Finally arriving late in the evening to Tangier, where we stayed Tanger Minah Royal,. a regal hotel that was very popular with celebrities in the mid 20th Century.

Today was another travel day with a very foggy crossing from Tangier to Tarifa, and then onto to Seville. Along the way we heard the story of bull fighting in Spain. Andalusa is a popular bull fighting area, as well as agriculture - oranges, olives , tomatoes, grapes etc.
Tuesday 1st September 2015 Seville
Had a morning orientation tour of Sevilla inspecting world expo buildings constructed in 1929 and the Plaza American and Plaza Espanya - great replica buildings and preserved excellently. Following that we visited the Alhazar - a royal palace and cathedral. Christopher Colombus set sail from Sevilla on his discovery voyage to the Americas in 1492. So much history !

Another long drive to Lisboa with a free afternoon to wander the inner city streets. Wonderful dinner at a seafood restaurant on the banks of the River Tagus. After a ferry trip across the river the entry ticket into the restaurant was a glass of beer followed by a seafood feast. Farwelled our bus driver  - Sergio.
Thursday 3rd September 2015 Seville

This morning we had an orientation tour of Lisboa took us to the Belem Tower and Monastry Jerome, the final resting place and tomb of Vasco de Gama. That afternoon a trip to Cascais and Sintra, both interesting places. Cascais is a seaside resort for the rich of Portugal and Sintra was the summer palace when the royal family was in power.

Friday 4th September 2015 Fatima - Salamanca
Before we left Portugal, we visited the religious city of Fatima, established because of the visitation of to 3 children in the area, where 3 secrets were revealed to them.

Continued onto to Salamanca, with a 600 year old university, 200 year old Roman bridge and was the centre of hte Franco regime during the civil war.

Saturday 5th September 2015 Salamanca - Madrid
Back to Madrid and tour over !! What a great tour - thoroughly recommend Tralfalgar tours, it was excellently organised and carried out with lots of information and sight seeing opportunities. Would do another one of these tours - even put up with the early morning starts and constant pace. While we have now seen Morocco, it definitely wet our appetite to see and experience more of Spain and Portugal. Driving through the countryside in some places we could have just as well have been in Australia - both are very comfortable countries in which to tour !

Sunday 6th September 2015 Taragona
Caught the train from Madrid to Tarragona arriving late afternoon Sunday. High speed trains are fantastic. The station was about 9 km out of the centre of town, no problem - caught a bus in and walked to our hotel. What a come down from the 5 star hotels we had on the tour, but it was clean, comfortable and right in the centre of town. Immediately after checking in we went out for a walk and found that Tarragona was full of surprises ! First surprise was at the end of the Rambla Nova - the traditional main walking street, where families go out for a 'passeo' in the evenings, right at the end is a cliff top balcony looking straight over the Mediteranean coast and sea port .. wow what a view ! and totally unexpected !!
Monday 7th September 2015 Taragona
The town has history from the 1st century Roman inhabitance, through Medieval 13th and 14th century growth, then Frnech occupation in the 17th century and all the time building would occur over previous buildings and/or destruction would occur as defence and invasions took place.
Tuesday 8th September 2015 Taragona
Lots and lots of history, lots of current Spanish culture and a very comfortable stay. It was planned to be a chill out 3 days after our coach tour, and despite Tania having a bad chest cold (Graeme had all but recovered from his head cold) it turned out to be just that .. an excellent chill out time but with interesting things to do as well. Tomorrow we leave for France !!

Wednesday 9th September 2015 Carcassonne
Day spent packing bags and making our way to the Camp de Taragona railway station to catch the 15:52 train the Carcassone via Narbonne, expecting to arrive at 20:00.

Arrived late and hotel is a long way from anywhere, went a walk and coffee.

Thursday 10th September 2015 Taragona

Tania has a very bad cough which she picked up on tour, but it kept her up most of the night last night.  We caught a taxi to the airport to collect our hire car - a Citroen C4 Diesel automatic with a Satnav. Practiced driving around town getting used to left hand drive and on the wrong side of the road! Carcassonne has a walled city with Roman roots from the 1st century, then a lot of development during Medieval times.

We had a quick look around Carcassonne including visiting the famous walled city that is used in a number of movies set in medieval times, including Robin Hood. Quite impressive structures, but very commercialised. Hamburger for dinner - we start our self drive tour tomorrow !

France - lagrasse, beziers, Millieu viaduct, clermont l'hautre
Friday 11th September 2015 Lagrasse - Clermont l'Hautre

Planned route for today - Lagrasse Abbey - Beziers -Millieu Bridge. Our Satnav was set to take thee shortest route possible, so we find ourselves driving through farm lanes before finally finding a bitumen road. Exciting way to commence our first drive in Europe !

Lagrasse Abbey was a beautiful little French village tucked away in the mountains with awesome scenery.

We had heard about the Orbe Aqueduc at Beziers and it was worth it. This is where two rivers meet and boats transgress a lock to get from one to the other.  Luckily we were able to see some boats go through the lock while we were there.

From there we drove north specifically to see the Millieu Viaduct, a suspension bridge that spans a valley at ta very high altitude, and is spectacular. Did the mandatory drive across the bridge (7.5 euro toll), got to the other side, did a u-turn and came back -- yes - another 7.5 euro toll !! Expensive sight seeing !!

We booked a room via booking.com while on the road at Clearmont l'Hautre - which turned out to be a home stay BnB. It was lovely, friendly hosts and beautiful surround.

France - pont du gard, nimes, Avignon
Sunday 13th September 2015 Pont du Gard, Avignons
The motel we chose at Uzes is very close to Pont du Gard, so an early morning start and arrived there at 9.00am, we were the 2nd car in the car park.
Awesome structure and setting over the river.
We then headed back to Nimes to visit the Maison Cerie, a Roman temple built around the 1st century.
Drove onto Avignon, had lunch in the car park, did a train ride, saw the Papal Palace and the Pont Saint-Beneget half structured bridge across the Rhone. Tried to find accommodation before we left. ended up in a small town called Lauris, in a basic, basic apartment. No sheets, no towels, no wi-fi, no parking and a fold out sofa bed !! The whole day had been stressful since lunch, so finding a little cafe in Lauris turned out to be a real treat.

Tried to find accommodation the for the night before we left and settled on an apartment at Lauris, a little town in the mountains. Well ... it took us forever to find the apartment, no parking within 300 metres and it was an authentic 18th century apartment ! True it only cost us 44 Euros, but wow it was different.

The whole day had been stressful since lunch, so finding a little cafe in Lauris turned out to be a real treat As it turns out we had the best French meal of the trip so far in a little cafe around the corner - it was a fabulous treat for us !.
FRance - aix-en-provence, st tropez Mandelieu la Napoule
Monday 14th September 2015 Aix-En-Provence, St. TRopez
Lazy start to the day, basically because we had to pack everything up, then go get the car and load it up. Tania got lost on the way back to the apartment, but we eventually got going. Drive to Aix-En-Provence - what a delightful city. It is our favourite French city so far, really nice feel to it, lots of history and just very, very pleasant. We did the 11.00a tourist train then wandered back into the areas we liked most. We called into the tourist centre to book some accommodation for that night.

Left at 2.30pm to see St Tropez ... what a mistake, it was glitzy Gold Coast, but ten times over .. and the traffic often was at a standstill which put us back nearly 1 hour causing us to run late for our accommodation stop which we didn't get to until 7.00 pm that night.Stayed at Mandelieu la Napoule, near Cannes.

Room was very nice except for the distance from the reception and the microwave didn’t work. We challenged the staff about the microwave next morning and received a 10euro refund.

France - Grasse
Tuesday 15th September 2015 Grasse, Cannes, Ventimiglia

Got going around 10.00am towards Cannes, which we drove through but didn’t see anything that attracted us to stop, not much there at all.

Tania wanted to visit the Fragonard perfume factory at Grasse, where they have made perfume for centuries. We did a tour which explained the process and bought some Gare de Perfume. We also visited another museum in the town, where Tania was intrigued by the clothing and fashion items displayed.

From there we drove through and got lost in Nice ... didn't get out the car ... decided to drive on, to Monaco, but it was getting late and after our St Tropez experience we gave Monaco a miss as well and drove straight onto Italy and a little town called Ventimiglia. What a gem ! As soon as we got here we decided to stay 2 nights.

Picture9
Italy - Ventimiglia
Wednesday 16th September 2015 Italy - Ventimiglia
First stop in Italy was Ventimiglia. This is quite near the France border on the coast and we arrived after driving into Nice and getting lost in the city, just wanted to get out and also decided not to even try to drive into Monaco - we were getting too stressed in city traffic.

Anyway arrived in Ventimglia and sat down at a cafe that had wifi and tried to find some accommodation. Found and booked a BnB slightly off the Esplanade and it turned out to be a gem. As soon as we arrived we decided to book in for a second night. Fantastic hosts and great accommodation.

Next day we took a drive into the mountains on the host's recommendation to see Dolceacqua and Apricale, 2 medieval villages nestled in the mountains. They were GREAT ! Worth driving along some of the roads which were often only wide enough for one car !!

We returned early for a restful afternoon, chicken schnitzels and salad for dinner. After planning our next few days, we decided to skip Genoa and Porrtfino, heading straight to Cinque Terra. We found a BnB at Levanto for 70Euros a night ! Early night.

Italy - Cinque Terra
Levanto5
Thursday 17th - Friday 18th September 2015 Italy - Cinque Terra
Had a lovely last breakfast at our Ventimiglia BnB, left around 10.00 am and stayed on the motorway most of the way to Levanto. Tolls of 24.40 Euro. Arrived around 1.00 pm, booking into our BnB Monterosso. Our host at the accommodation gave us a car park pass, so we drove to the Levanto train station and caught the train to Monterosso, buying a train and national park 2 day pass for all towns at Cinque Terra.
Monterossa was a pretty town which we walked seeing all the sights including the huge cemetery on the hill. Weather was very humid and clouds were hanging over the hills. MY camera started plying up with the lens not retracting properly. Lots and lots of tourists here!!
Friday morning, we caught to train from Levanto to Riomaggiore, the furthest town away. We had planned to walk back to Manarola, but the path was closed. We then tried to walk from Manorla to Corniglia, but the path was closed ! So trained between this towns. We did get to walk from Corniglia to Vernazzo. Graeme wimped out of doing the final 2 plus hour walk back to Monterossa.
We loved the towns, two of the walks were closed, the trains were overcrowded and running late and the ferry shuttles weren't working. We did do the 1 1/2 hour walk between Corniglia and Vernazza which was spectacular, and hard work (more so for Graeme !). Reasonably hot but we had plenty of water. Favourite town was Vernazza, but each town had some special surprises.
Italy - Pistoia - Florence
Saturday 19th - Monday 21st September 2015 Italy - Florence
Arrived in Pistoia around lunch time and decided to have a chill out day. The camera had actually died and we both needed haircuts. Found a hairdresser where all the staff spoke Italian so the challenge was to explain what we wanted...spent over 3 hours there (mostly for Tania - not me !!) but boy do we look good and now every one takes us for Italians ! 🙂
Monterossa was a pretty town which we walked seeing all the sights including the huge cemetery on the hill. Weather was very humid and clouds were hanging over the hills. MY camera started plying up with the lens not retracting properly. Lots and lots of tourists here!!
Hotel in Pistoia was Le Rose, with a service station out front and very friendly staff!
Also looked around for a camera including a drive out to a store called Media World (- sort of like Harvey Norman or Good Guys) but they were hopeless, had virtually no stock and no interest in helping.

Sunday morning breakfast was good at Le Rose, we caught the 9.12  am train into Florence and we were both just blown away, what a fantastic city with so much to see. We met a man at the train station who sold us a city map for 1 euro, and he highlighted all the attractions. He said it would save us the need to take a hop on hop off bus tour, and he was right, except for attractions outside the city area.  So today we just walked around following his map, and loved what we found. The city was full of surprises and we treated ourselves to a leather jacket each ! Also was able to find a new camera...everybody happy.

Monday we came back and did take a hop on hop off bus tour which turned out to be a bit disappointing. We did get to Fiseole above Florence and views back over the city. Had an early night and looked for accommodation to get us to Pisa.
Italy - Pisa
Tuesday 22nd September 2015 Italy - Pisa
What ever you do don't get an architect from Pisa !!! Every building we looked at leaned, not just the Tower. Not much else here, we stayed at San Miniato and trained it into Pisa for the afternoon. Had pizza in Pisa and walked around for a while. Florence was always going to be a hard act to follow and Pisa really didn't have a chance. Anyhow, we have been to see the leaning Tower of Pisa!
Italy - San Miniato
Wednesday 23rd September 2015 Italy - San Miniato
Wednesday morning we walked up to old city to of San Miniato, which was really nice although the weather was rather gloomy. As it turned out this was to be our first day of solid rain and a bit chilly. San Miniato.
Italy - Certaldo
Wednesday 23rd September 2015 Italy - Certaldo
Headed of for Siena calling into Certaldo on the way. Once again an old medieval walled city.

Paid for 2 hours parking but only used 1. Town was quiet but full of restuarants.

Did the full walk around then off to Siena in pelting rain on the road.

Once again had trouble finding our accommodation Bnb,, ending up following a little old man cross country into the back entrance of the hotel.

Cristina was very welcoming and this was shaping up to be the best accommodation so far !

We were able to catch the bus into the old centre of Siena. Had a good look around and back home to cook chicken schnitzels and rice for dinner.
Italy - Sienna
Thursday 23rd September 2015 Italy - Sienna
Thursday slept in for a lazy morning start then did a day drive to San Gimignano and Volterra. We have now officially seen as many old walled medieval cities as we need to.

Decided to hightail it out of Tuscany and head north to Bologna tomorrow. Had delicious pizza for lunch in San Gimignano and Graeme had a gelato. San Gimignano was a very touristy town while Volterra was more lay back.

Did some more supermart shopping back in Sienna and chicken for dinner and made sandwiches for our drive tomorrow.

Friday 24th September 2015 Italy - Bolgna
Got going reasonably early (9:30), filled up with fuel and a two hour drive to Bologna. Toll gate would accept our credit card, but sorted when an operator came out to assist.

For the first time on our trip we found our hotel without any trouble! Drove straight off the highway and saw it straight away. Checked in and caught the bus into the city centre.

Bologna was a pleasantly surprising city, lots of medieval buildings and lots of covered, connecting walkways Only the afternoon to spend walking around the city, found more leaning towers and lots of other interesting buildings, market, shops and unearthed roman stones beneath the Church of Bologna.

We climbed one of the leaning towers for a bird's eye view .. 498 steps of Asinello’s Tower.. If you think the photos exaggerate the angle of the towers .. they don't !

Oh, had pasta bolognese in Bologna of course (this is the home of Bolognese sauce) !! Certainly worth the visit here !!

Italy - Venice
Saturday 26th - Monday 28th September 2015 Italy - Venice
Left Bologna before 10:00am after a very good included breakfast. The My One hotel here was the best we have had since our tour, now on the way to Mestre and the Hotel Altieri.

Arrived around noon, checked in and caught the bus #19 into Venice. Arrived just before 2.00 pm and left at 8.00 pm. Took all that time just to walk one track around the main area of the city. Lots of small alleyways, bridges, canals and gondolas !

Find our way around proved challenging and we had 2 maps to help us. San Marco Square was very pleasant.

Caught to water bus (after pushing and shoving from the Italians who didn’t know what orderly lining up and waiting was), to the Islands off Venice. Experience glass blowing, Lace work and bought some Murano glass lollies. Coloured houses and a striking bell tower in Burrano. Walked over a wooden bridge, had caffe and spritz , did the grand canal bus tour at night and finished off with the best pasta dish so far at ristorante al Nino right on the Grand Canal. (smokers and all).

Venice was one of planned must see places and it did not disappoint. It is so different to other cities and just understanding how it was built (on 10,000,000 tree trunks driven into the mud, trees from Slovenia) ...wow !!! We walked for 5 hours the first day, caught water buses to the islands of Murrano, Burrano and Mazzorbo, then back in the third day for more walking and discoveries. Loved it. NB don't wear a backpack in a Murrano glass shop.

This turned out to be a casual day looking around the portions of Venice we hadn’t yet ventured into. Tania was keen to see the Textile Museum, but would you believe it is closed on Mondays ! So we went to the glove shop, bracelet shop, some cakes, coffee and early dinner at same restaurant as last night. Back at the hotel by 5.20pm to work out the next stage of the trip … maybe Verona ??

Italy - Manatova
Tuesday 29th September 2015 Italy - Manatova
Left Venice (Mestre) around 9:45 after breakfast the Altieri Hotel, accompanied by some obnoxious French children.

We were going to heading to Verona, but last minute change of plans saw us dropping into Padua for a quick 1 hour visit and look around and then onto Mantova for the night.

map6

Had time to catch a bus into the old city and have a wander around and were once again pleasantly surprised with what we found. Accommodation was brand new and looked fantastic! Unfortunately the oven blew the circuit breaker every time we switched it on, the hot water in the shower was barely warm, and we re-wrote their English guidelines and instructions for guests due to their interesting attempt of translation from Italian to English!

Italy - Milan
Wednesday 30th September - Friday 2nd October 2015 Italy - Milan
Slow start to the morning making suggestions to the accommodation owners via written notes. Then 2 plus hours on the motorway and we arrived into Milan just after noon. We selected accommodation in the outskirts but close to a metro station. We checked in and immediately caught a train into Centro.

We stepped up from the metro station straight into the Piazza Duomo .. .WOW .. a spectacular basilica and the Galleria fronting a large piazza !!

Didn't take long for us to like Milano, we had booked in for 2 nights and after the first afternoon decided to stay an extra night Really enjoyed exploring the city with lots of highlights, did the 3 routes on the hop on hop off bus and the last day went into the Castilli Museum and spent 4 hours there.

First two nights we were able to cook our own dinner again which was a pleasant change. While on the hop on hop off bus we were sitting up top on the open deck freezing, so Graeme decided to buy a scarf from a street vendor to keep warm. Tania then called me Graeme Pooleo as she said I just looked like a local. We had to move hotels though, but it was worth it.

The second hotel was on the way out of Milan on the road toward Torino – our next planned destination. The Hotel H2C @ Miantiori was next to a huge shopping outlet with discount stores and still open at 3.30pm when we arrived. We purchased dinner there. We both said Milano was a winner and we would return one day.

Italy - Turin
Saturday 3rd - Sunday 4th October 2015 Italy - Turin
Got into Torino around noon, dropped our car and bags and headed into the city centre for a good look around. Took A “Tania” tour of the city centre. Torino is similar to Milano but on a smaller scale.

There is still evidence of Roman city walls and a Teatro which was discovered when excavations for extensions to one of the palaces occurred. Located on the banks of the River Po, we couldn't say it is a pretty city, but there is a lot of uniformity in the architecture and layout.

There are covered walkways, market place (Flea and food), palaces, cathedrals, just another Italian city. We stumbled across a service in the duomo, with a large procession occurring.

It was rainy day and got worse as the day wore on. Ended with pasta for dinner one fish and one vegetable pasta.
Sunday we spent at the Egyptian museum, which has the biggest and broadest range of artifacts outside of Cairo. Can’t believe we were looking at objects that were 4000-6000 years old. It appears the Italians set out to plunder Eqyptian artifacts at some stage – they did a good job of it. We spent 8 hours there and had to rush it in the end. Sunday was also Tania's birthday so we selected a specialty Chinese restaurant in the city centre, it specialised in Italian, Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese !

We opted for Chinese and really enjoyed it!

Had about a 2 hour drive from Turin to Chambery, where we stopped for lunch. We drove through the Frejus-Mont Blanc tunnel, 12.88 km long and 44.20 euros for the toll. Today cost us a total of 69.60 euros in tolls !!!!! But money well spent as it saved us about 4-5 hours in travel time if we had stuck to non toll roads, not to mention the stress of driving on winding mountainous roads.

Chambery turned out to be a nice little town as you can see. after not being able to see the Shroud of Turin in Turin, there was a display here in the church which was very informative and had a full size photo of the shroud. Probably saw it better than we would have if able in Turin.

France - Annecy
Tuesday 6th - Wednesday 7th October 2015 France - Annecy
It rained most of the time we were in Annecy, in fact the first day it poured ! But that wasn't enough to deter our liking of this very picturesque and quaint village sitting on the Lac d'Annecy with hills both sides. We had cooking facilities here as well, so had some home cooked meals in our comfortable apartment that was only 10 minutes walk from the town centre.
On the second day we took a drive out to Gorges du Fier on the recommendation of a local café owner ... and was glad we did, it was a change of scenery from towns and cities and a pleasant walk. The walkway was attached to the side of the rock face 24 metres above the rushing water which was slowly cutting new causeways into the limestone rocks.
France - Lyon
Thursday 8th - Saturday 10th October 2015 France - Lyon
Thursday - we left out Annecy apartment at 10.30 and arrived in Lyon just under 2 hours later. We couldn't check in until 3pm, so we parked the car and walked into the city center until 6pm. On our return, we transferred our luggage into our room ready to return the car tomorrow.
We have coped pretty well with driving in Europe, but now look forward to not having to drive on the 'wrong' side of the road anymore. Have done the hop on hop of bus here and must say it is the best one we have done (out of 5) so far. Very informative and gives a view of the modern parts of Lyon as well as the historic. Lyon is a comfortable city for us and we are enjoying the French patisseries !

Saturday - Explored more of Lyon, but then had to pack to get ready for train to Paris tomorrow!

France - Paris

Sunday 11th- Thursday 15th October 2015 France - Paris

Paris was one of must do destinations and it didn't disappoint ! We had a great time here, although the weather turned against us, with our visit to the Eiffel Tower being very cold around six degrees with a wind chill making it feel a lot colder. We did all the monuments and sites we could fit in and walked many kilometres. We did Arc De Triomphe, Montmarte, Les Catacombs, Moulin Rouge, Eiffel Tower, Champs D'Elysee, Latin Quarter, Left Bank, Right Bank, Notre Dame, Louvre etc. etc. Loved our time here!
England - London - Leicester
eurostar
Friday 16th October 2015 France - Eurostar - England
We had a smooth 2 hour trip to London on the Eurostar, arrived at Saint Pancras Railway Station around 12.30 pm. . Weather was gloomy all the way. Arrived at London, found our way to the Avis counter, picked up another car and immediately drove out of London. we had no fixed plan, we just decided to get as far north (toward York) as we could. This actually caused trouble with immigration when we were leaving Paris, as they wanted an address for us when we arrived in England. This time there was no GPS in the car, the pressure was on the find our way around. Only got as far as Leicester before calling it a day and bedded down for the night.
England - York

Saturday 17th- Sunday 18th October 2015 Englande - York

Had some mobile phone and tablet problems while on the road which we tried to sort out and ended up leaving town around 11.45 am, later than planned. Arrived in York around 2.30 at our great accommodation in a guest house close to the city. Walked in and we were captivated by the quaintness of the walled town. Sunday we spent just walking the town for a better look around. Long day but saw plenty and still loved it. Our guest house proved to be splendid and we extended our stay for one more night. I had traditional kippers one morning for breakfast- delicious!!
England - Helmsley & Rievaulx & Scarborough

Monday 19 th October 2015 England - Helmsley & Rievaulx & Scarborough

We did a day drive out from York visiting Thirsk, Helmsley, Pickering and Scarborough. It was a long day but we saw some wonderful sights. We joined up for an annual membership to English Heritage .... so now we will be visiting abbeys and castles all over England. Started today with Helmsley Castle, Rievaulx Abbey and tried to get to Pickering Castle but were too late. Also visited Scarborough, a seaside resort, where we had traditional fish and chips for tea.
England - Tynemouth

Tuesday 20th October 2015 England -  Tynemouth

This was a full day driving broken by a lunchtime stop at Tynemouth, just near Newcastle, where we visited Tynemouth Priory. Another abbey that was ordered to be destroyed by Henry VIII in 1539. So many monastries were lost on his orders. Arrived in Edinburgh at around 18.00.
Scotland - Edinburgh

Wednesday 21st - Thursday 22nd October 2015 Scotland -  Edinburgh

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, and features great monuments such as Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, classical buildings and a city built on the edge of a volcano. We spent Wednesday just walking around and visiting Edinburgh Castle (4 hours). Very interesting and great views over the city. Thursday was the hop on hop off bus and a visit to the remains of Mary Kings Close, an underground city with a view to life in the 16th century.
England - Carlisle

Friday 23rd October 2015 England -  Carlilse

Left Edinburgh and headed for Carlisle, visiting Carlisle Castle, Brougham Hall and Pooley Bridge on the way through. Booked into a guest house that was a liitle out of the centre of Carlisle, but it turned out that it had a bar and dining room for evening meals so we didn't have to travel far (downstairs for dinner). It turned out to be the biggest dinner we have had - boy the English like to serve up big servings of food !
England - Windermere (Stott Hill), Chester

Saturday 24th October 2015 England -  Windermere (Stott Hill), Chester

Heading South ! Left Carlisle and drove through the Lake District toward North Wales. We stopped off at the Stott Park Bobbin Mill, which is the last operating bobbin mill in England and very much a part of the Industrial Revolution providing bobbins for all the material looming mills in the 18th century. This particular mill closed in 1971 and has been preserved to show how it used to operate in the 18th century.

From there we headed to North Wales and a seaside town called Llandudno for the night. On the way we just puzzled at the road signs in Welsh ... there is no way we could ever try to learn or understand it, but we had fun trying to pronounce some of the signs.

We drove through Windermere on the way which appeared to be a very popular tourist spot and so busy we didn't bother to stop. From there we drove on to Chester where we had a quick stop and walk through the Tudor Rows ! Four main streets had a "Row" connecting all commercial premises at the first floor level...very unusual and established in the 17th century !

Wales - Llandudno

Saturday 24th October 2015 Wales - Llandudno

Got to Llandudno around 17:00. walked inot town and had Indian for dinner. Our accommodation was an interesting BnB with a shower in the bath (not attached to the wall) and carpet on the floor !
Wales - Conwy

Sunday 25th October 2015 Wales - L

Tried to get an early start, but wasted time looking for a Costa Coffee ! On the way to Church Stretton today, we visited Conwy Castle.

Arrived in town to find their was food festival in progess, so finding a park proved difficult. Finally got into the castle and looked around for about an hour.

Another traffic block out of town meant we missed out on visiting Caerefron Castle cause we still had a 2.5 hour drive to get to Church Stretton, where we were meeting our friend Diane.

England - Church Stretton. Wenlock Priory, Ironbridge & Shrewsbury

Monday 26th -  October 2015 England - Church Stretton, Wenlock Priory, Ironbridge and Shrewsbury

After a lovely breakfast at Diane's BnB and Cafe, we took a drive to Wenlock Priory, Ironbridge and Shrewsbury. Days are getting shorter now, with sunset at around 5pm. We are making the most of our English Heritage membership on our tour getting into places either for free or for half price.
England - Cotswold

Tuesday 27th -  October 2015 England - Church Stretton, Stokesay Castle, Church Stoke and Bishop Castle

England - Church Stretton. Stokesay Castle, Church Stoke, Bishop Castle

Wednesday 28th -  October 2015 England - Cotswold

Drove through the Cotswold district visiting Chipping Camden, Broadway, Snowshill, Stow on the Wold, Lower Slaughter, Upper Slaughter and Bourton on the Water. Wow - we had a perfect sunny day, autumn tonings in the flora and a great drive through the country side. Staying at Gloucester for the night.
Cotswold Map
England - Bath

Thursday 28th -  October 2015 England - Bath

Hit the road early and drove in the rain straight through to bath arriving at our accommodation stop at 11.15. Couldn't check so parked the car and walked into Bath and straight to the Roman Baths. A really interesting place and again so much history to absorb. Enjoyed the visit and the quick walk around the city afterwards.
England - Farleigh Hungerford Castle, Stonehenge

Friday 28th -  October 2015 England - Poole

After one the best B&B breakfasts on our trip we headed off early to visit Farleigh Hungerford Castle, then onto Stonehenge. Both Tania and I remarked this was not as impressive as expected ... but it is one of those things we had to tick off the it !

From there onto to Poole to stay the night of course !

Found a self catering apartment. Had a nice walk around Poole next morning .. town looks as if it is struggling with lots of vacant shops. Still a lovely harbour and again lots of historic building in the old city centre.

England - Poole, Bournemouth, Brighton

Saturday 29th - Sunday 30th  October 2015 England - Brighton

Saturday we headed off toward Brighton with a quick stop and walk down the pier at Bournemouth, where we had to pay a toll to enter the pier.

Stayed at the White Horse Hotel at Rottingdean, about 6km from Brighton, just a short bus ride. Spent whole day walking around Brighton finding "The Lanes" and "North Laines" very interesting and of course a walk along the foreshore and down the Brighton Pier.

Early day to get back and pack our bags after using the car for a mobile suit case for the last 18 days we have to drop the car back tomorrow,

England - London

Monday 2nd October - Friday 6th November 2015 England - London

Wow what a majestic city .. lots of big impressive buildings. We walked the Thames from Blackfriars to Westminster and then onto Buckingham Palace. Strand and Fleet Street. Did the hop on hop off bus for a full day on Tuesday, went to the West End for show (Kinkyboots at the Adelphi) on Wednesday night, hit the Camden Town markets, and strolled Regent and Oxford Streets. Caught buses, underground, overground and trains and saw the crown Jewels at the Tower of London. We did plenty, but still so much we didn't get to do. Loved London.
UAE - Dubai

Saturday 26th - Tuesday 10th November 2015  UAE - Dubai

On the way home now and we had a 3 day stop over in Dubai. Arrived at hotel at 4.00 am in the morning after flight from London and went straight to bed. Got up reasonable early in attempt to acclimatise to new time zone. Dubai is a city of contrasts, with old and new, the new being created at a fast pace and still cranes everywhere on the horizon. What did strike us was the distances between points in Dubai, certainly not a walking city. We made good use of the local metro and tram services to get around. Needless to say it was hot in Dubai but that was welcome after the coolness of the last month in UK and Europe. Not looking forward to coming home, left Dubai at 2.00 am in the morning. Crazy city never closes !
