Italy – Altamura / Monopoli

Day 65 Friday 20th October 2023 - Altamura & Monopoli

Left Matera just after 8:30, another gloomy morning and looked like it had rained overnight again. Fleece jackets on as we left. Today we are heading to Altamura, famous for its bread which is made in a certain style. We arrived and set the GPS to find us Panificio di Guisi, the most well known in town. We had planned this two days ago.

In the meantime we purchased some bread in Matera yesterday, that we realised was the same famous bread !! so we already had a loaf ! Pane di Matera / Pane di Altamura - same recipe, same region - in fact only 5 towns in Puglia are licenced to produce it.

We didn't waste our time at Panificio di Guisi, we purchased some more traditional focaccia slices 🙂 - yum ! Purchased 2 slices at the original bakery, then another around the corner at the new premises !

We did walk through the old town of Altamura on the way to the bakery, stopping for our morning coffee next to the Basilica.

Next stop - Monopoli, our base for the next few days as we explore Puglia.

Arrived at 13:00, parked our car outside our booked apartment, but it was not ready to book in yet, so we walked into Centro Storico of Monopoli which sits on the coastline. We walked around th maze of narrow streets some lined with cafes, restaurants, shops and clotheslines attached to the balconies full of washing. There is a small rocky beach and protected harbour. Nothing to rave about, but pleasant enough.
