Day 4 Sunday 17th August 2025 - Tallinn, Estonia

Early start to the day again, both waking up before our alarm went off. The breakfast spread this morning was pretty good again and we tried hard once more not to overload our plates.

A 9.00 walking tour of Tallinn old town, this time by a local resident. Unfortunately she was thinking in Estonian and trying to speak in English which made the tour a little hard to follow and concentrate on what she was saying.

Nonetheless it was an informative tour, perhaps the most interesting thing was that the tour guide mentioned how they supported Ukraine, and certainly were worried that if Russia took over Ukraine again, it was only be a matter of time before they came looking to take over the Baltics.. again.

Also, the Russian embassy located in town was subjected to a huge amount of protest material on the footpath outside, with lots of signs calling Putin a war criminal.

The old town of Tallinn dates well back to Medieval times and has been well preserved, so much so that it is an UNESCO World heritage listed site.

The old town is very much winding small alleyways and cobblestones - very quaint. Once again following the guided tour, we were left to have our own free time in the town. We stumbled across a beach volleyball match being played just out of the old town and sat and watched that for a couple of hours.

Tallin
Needed to report back to our hotel at 4pm for the bus transfer to the port to catch our overnight ferry to Stockholm, Sweden. The ferry was huge ! Our room was on deck 9, room 9214. The cabin was VERY compact with drop down beds and a small ensuite bathroom. Although small, once we got organised it was very comfortable. We left port at 6.00pm for the 14 hour journey to Stockholm. We explored the various decks of the ferry, the numerous restaurants, bars, sundeck, theatre and shopping level. Enjoyable time was spent on the sundeck and bar before heading to the Aleksandra restaurant for dinner where Tania had a seafood soup and Graeme a Chicken Kiev. Showered, beds prepared and sleep by 11.30 pm and soundly sleeping when our granddaughter rang us at 1.30 am (8.30am Melbourne time)… The ferry was called the Baltics Queen and comfort and facility wise, left the Greek Island ferries for dead !

I visited Tallin when it was part of the USSR. In the middle of winter. It was quite a scarey place in scarey times but very pretty under snow. Enjoy!

Bet you loved hearing from Gabrielle at that time! Really interested in the frank comments about Russia and Putin in Tallin, etc, especially the blackboard bunker comment!
