Day 11 - Copenhagen - Excursion to Dragor
Went up the the ‘Market Square Buffet’ on Deck 15 - MY GOD what an experience, it was packed and people were pushing and shoving to get to the food, loading up huge platefuls of food, loud talking and no lining up, no manners and no respect for others. What a welcome to our first cruise buffet meal !
Excursion was reasonably well organised, Valeria our Italian guide was great, we learnt more in the 3 hours about Copenhagen and Denmark, then we had with our previous guides. We went to a few places we had already visited in the city centre, but then headed out of town to a small fishing village where buildings have been preserved in time from when it was established in the 17th century. The streets are the original cobblestones and thick thatched roofs on the houses.
A highlight here was the local owner, seeing our group admiring his house, offered to give us its history and his experience with renovating it over the past 2 years. He mentioned the new roof cost 50,000 euro (approx $100K) and took us into his back yard and let us look inside...wow, so impressive. The tour also included a coffee and pastry at the local cafe here.
We got dropped off back in town (rather than return to the ship) and we explored another part of the city we hadn't yet been to. This was the area known as Little Amsterdam, with manmade canals and a final walk back through a working military barracks, the only one in the world that allows the public to walk through it.
Back on our ship by 15:30, caught up on some sock washing, relaxed before our dinner again, our regular 20:00 sitting time in the Colorado Restaurant. Tonight however, a menu was sitting on the table for Graeme, showing the meals available for him, as I had notified them when we booked that I had a nut allergy. A senior waiter, a lady from Sth Africa who resembled Miss Trumbold, the headmistress from the story and musical Matilda. She stated that she needed to know exactly what I was going to order, and make sure there were absolutely no nuts anywhere near my food.
It turned out her name was actually Wilma, and she had a wicked sense of humour, which was entertaining banter for our table during the meal. She would deliver my meal in person for each course. It was a fun night.
