Days 33 - Kilkenny, Ireland

Tuesday 16th September, 2025 -Kilkenny, Ireland

Our last full day in Ireland. Our BnB is within walking distance of the Kilkenny Castle, which had been in continuous use by the same family (Butler) for 600 years until 1935. It transformed from an early Norman fortress in the 11th century to the family estate in the 20th century, later falling into disrepair. It was finally 'sold' for 50 pounds to the state of Ireland providing they restore it and open it to the public, which is exactly what has happened.

Over the years it underwent multiple upgrades, but there are still original medieval basement footings of the bastions and signs of a Norman dwelling pre-dating the first castle.

We lashed out and went on the hour guided tour, and John our guide was fantastic in explaining the history and pointing out the highlights of the castle.

Following the internal tour, we wandered around the gardens and rose garden areas. It still has grounds of 52 acres of beautiful landscaped surrounds.

After our castle visit we walked along the canal walk eventually looping back, covering 3 kilometres along the water's edge. It was a very pleasant and relaxed way to spend our last day, and the sky at times was gloomy but it didn't rain all day!
