Day 20 Agra - Dhula Village

Wednesday 19th August, 2026

A long driving day today. we met in the hotel lobby at 7.00am and packed the bus to leave straight away. We were promised some fruit for breakfast along the way and we stopped at a roadside stall for bananas. The rule of thumb here eat only what you can peel !

First stop was Fatehpur Sikri, the now deserted former capital of the Mughals, built over a twelve year period, but lived in for only four years by the 5th Indian Mughals, Akbar the Great. They only lived there for a short time leaving due to lack of water and also some political reasons. It is consequently quite well preserved and was re-discovered and excavated by the British in 1904. Akbar the Great had 3 wives of different religions, a Hundi, a Muslim and a Christian. He mandated that people should be free to follow whatever religion they preferred - hallelujah !! The fort was constructed in the 16th Century (1574). He had 3000 concubines at this palace.

Back in the bus to drive toward Abhaneri Step well, with a stop for lunch along the way. The step well was built in the 6th century and is a water harvesting system in addition to accessing a spring at he bottom. It is constructed using V shaped elements, that while appear to be steps, were in fact the structural strengthening of the walls. It is 35 X 35 metres at the top, narrowing down toward the bottom, and 30 metres deep. The ingenuity of the construction is a marvel and a credit to the builders.

Next stop was our camp for the night at Dhula Village in tent accommodation. The family that runs Dhula Village was the previous royal family that ruled over the principality prior to India being declared a republic in 1947, when all principalities were handed over to the new state. There were monuments on the property that are memorials to family members.

Back to the campsite for a tasty buffet dinner, followed by a very comfortable night's sleep.

Ah – the delights of low budget travel in India. Not many do this, so that is a jewel in the crown for you. Tents in Dhula village does not invoke comfortable night’s sleep to me, especially with CPAP machines. But, heh – it could well be glamping tents.

I can see you two losing weight what with all that walking and careful eating.
