Day 21 & 22 - Dhula Village - Jaipur

Thursday 20th August, 2026

Today is predominately a transfer day from Dhula Village through to Jaipur - The Pink City ! There were a couple of stops along the way, the first one being Jaipur Palace right in the centre of the Pink City. There is still a royal family residing in the palace, a young king descendant from an impressive line of maharajas that ruled over the area prior to independence. We had a local guide show around the palace and museum - quite beautiful.

Following the palace visit we had time for a quick walk along the market street just outside the palace, a typical Indian market place where traders are keen to get your attention and sell you something.

A restaurant stop for lunch, it is amazing how good the eating places are in India, but there is no way we would know about them, let alone find them without our G Adventures guide taking us to them. We always try something different and always local Indian fare, although we do seem to order garlic naans quite often. Tania is keen to get just a plate of vegetables, so we order that and a meat dish, generally rice and we always share to experience variety. Everything has been delicious so far - and no Dehli belly !! (touch wood)

After lunch we checked into our hotel, where we will be staying for 2 nights. Did some rinsing of clothes and at 5pm, the group left the hotel to go for a walk through the markets within the Pink City.

We refer to The Pink City as the inner walled part of Jaipur that was painted pink for the visit of the Prince of Wales back in 1876.

We walked through the fresh food market, spice market with lots of chillies, flowers and essential oils. Our guide negotiated 3 nearby tuk tuks to take us through the crowded streets to our dinner restaurant.

It was one our member's birthday, so had birthday cake and fireworks ! The restaurant was outdoors on a rooftop and it was a pleasant balmy night. The highlight was that during our meal the power blacked out in this part of the city - no problem, candles came out so it was dinner by candlelight - how good could it get ?

Friday 21st August, 2026 - Jaipur

A lot of our group went on a cycling tour this morning starting at 5.30am, we opted not to go, so it was a lazy morning for us. Graeme spent more time updating our blog, Tania slept in until 8.00am when we went down to the restaurant for a coffee or two !

We were sightseeing around Jaipur today, left the hotel around 10.00 am and headed for the Amber Fort. Located at Amber and it was the former capital of the area prior to Jaipur. It was constructed by the maharaja's in the 16th century and is a majestic hilltop fort blending both Hindu and Mughal architecture. There is also a connected military fort accessed via secret tunnels on the adjacent hilltop. Very picturesque with gardens and artificial lakes. The capital was moved to a new location in Jaipur because they were running out of room to expand and water for the growing population.

The engineering that the mughals introduced was ingenious with solutions for cooling, heating, water supply, privacy (for the 3000 concubines) and decorations. There is a mirror hall here which is just exquisite.

Following the Amber Fort, it was time for another visit to an orphanage, school and women's workshop supported by G Adventures, helping out orphans and women in upskilling. We were treated to a very tasty lunch and then a block printing workshop. It is a nice felling that we are able to provide support to these organisations as we travel.

We had a chance to try out the block printing ourselves. It was called the Anoothi Project which empowers women, it also supports Vatsalya's education program for rural children.

Another amazing dinner for our last night in Jaipur.

The architecture and mosaic details are stunning.
