The Big Drive
The Big Drive
Day 1 Saturday 20th May 2023
Up early, hooked up and left home at 8:00 am. Checked milaage reading on odometer - 74747 and aimed for a breakfast stop at Port Wakefield at Pope's Cafe. Topped up with fuel at Pt Wakefield, then again at Pt Augusta. The PetrolSpy app on our phones directing us to the cheapest petrol stations on route.

We were planning on stopping at Kimba Roadhouse, but Liz W sent us a SMS on the way to say the at Kimba Showgrounds was the place to stay, with clean facilities and $2.00 for a hot shower. Cost - Donation !

That together with a curry from the Kimba Roadhouse made the stop all worthwhile.

Day 2 Sunday 21st May 2023
Left our Kimba free camp at around 9.15 and stopped in for breakfast at the Kimba Roadhouse - Egg and Bacon sandwiches and coffee - YUM !

After a quick visit to the Big Galah, we departed heading toward Ceduna, arriving at around 1345

Our site for the next 2 nights in Shelly Beach Caravan Park.

Day 3 Monday 22nd May 2023
Late morning start and it is drizzly. Very wet dew overnight and condensation inside our van.

Checked out the visitor's centre, town centre, Denial Bay and Thevenard. All pretty disappointing and views across the bay were hampered by the drizzle.

Caravan park facilities were ok, but located a long way from our van which was uncomfortable and muddy getting to and fro. Inside, once the floors were wet, which was most of the time, they were very slippery. Decided we wouldn't cone back to this park again.

Day 4 Tuesday 23rd May 2023
Today we start crossing the Nullabor ! We were on our way at 9:00. topping up with fuel. Noticed we are getting water in the cupboard by our door, frustrating and not sure how it is getting in - something to investigate !

Arrived at Nullabor Roahouse after stopping off at the Head of Bight (no whales but fantastic views of the Bunda Cliffs). Parked next to another Sportliner Avan, had dinner at the bar and spent time with other travellers in the bar. Facilities at Nullabor Roadhouse were quite good, meal was great. Found out today our packs from Outback Spirit had arrived in Adelaide

Day 5 Wednesday 24th May 2023
From Nullabor Roadhouse to Cocklebiddy - another long drive we not much to see .. just as well we have a USB stick of music to keep us entertained.

Stopped off at another cliff viewing area, passed through Border Village, Eucla and Madura. Towns here have their own time zone, 45 mins on from SA time, and 45 mins back from WA time. We arrived at 15:30 local time and had dinner that night in the Roadhouse restaurant - once again a really tasty meal, enhanced with romantic lighting when the generator died halfway through the meal.

Day 6 Thursday 25th May 2023
Cocklebiddy to Norseman, stopping at Caiguna and Balladonia, both fuel top up spots, arriving at Norseman at 14:00 WA time -even though it was a long drive. First sighting of Salmon gum trees - spectacular in the sunlight.

This ends the Nullabor crossing, tomorrow we turn south.
