Days 40 & 41 - Northern Highlands, Scotland

Tuesday 23rd September, 2025 - Northern Highlands, Scotland

We had a great night's sleep, perhaps the best of our trip. The birds and squirrels were there outside our window again which was nice to wake up to. The BnB here was fully self-contained and we had our bircher prepared last night before checking out and headed to the local Glenrowan Cafe for our morning latte.

The last couple of days we have been using WAZE for our navigation in the car (instead of Google maps) and we have selected "Wolfy" as the guide/voice in WAZE. He provides us with light hearted entertainment, including comments like "let's Howl while we turn right at the next intersection!", and "You'll be promoted to chief get away driver soon."  Every now again new random comments pop up to put a smile on our faces. Has been a bit of fun.

Hit the road and arrived at Inverness around 11:00, quickly found a car park and set out to explore the town on a Tania tour. We walked along the fast flowing Ness River on a picturesque path surrounded by stunning rows of character buildings. Towns up this way have stores with a larger amount of highland clothes, tartan scarves...well tartan everything along with general souvenirs. We also came across a few stores containing quite formal Scottish attire with traditional accessories.

We love when are staying in the same place for more than one night as it means we can have a bit of a sleep in. This morning we arranged to be at breakfast at 8:30 and enjoyed the extra time in bed.

Today is also looking to be a fine day starting with a blue sky and a chill in the air and warmed up gradually as the day progressed. We had planned a drive north from Dingwall along the coast dropping into a few villages along the way. We got as far north as Helmsdale after stopping in at Invergordon, Tain and Dornoch along the way. Brora was originally on the list but we chose not to stop, with our favourites being Tain and Dornoch. Both villages had lovely surprises, interesting architecture and history.

Nice relaxing drive today.
