Days 35 - Oban, Scotland

Thursday 18th September, 2025 - Oban, Scotland

Breakfast was included with our stay at the overpriced room at the Arrochar Hotel, it was ok, but not outstanding. Graeme had his first try of black pudding and haggis - ok but not outstanding. This morning we weren't in a hurry to hit the road, our next planned stop was Oban, about a 90 minute drive from Arrochar. Our route followed the lochs and rivers and was initially pretty narrow, but eventually widened out to a reasonable road to travel on.

Oban turned our to be a nice little bayside town, with ferries servicing the islands in the area (Isle of Mull etc). We walked the centre of town and the promenade along the water front.

We checked into our BnB, Heatherfield House, quite close to the centre of town and one of the nicer BnB's we have had on our trip. After check in, we walked up the hill to McCaig's Tower, sitting on Battery Hill above the town and built by a wealthy merchant in the nineteenth century as a tribute to his family. He died before finishing it and money was left in his will for his sister to complete the tower. She contested the will and the structure remains incomplete and now is referred to as the crown on Oban's skyline ! Interestingly, John McCaig built and lived in Heatherfield House, the BnB we were staying in.

Back down the hill, we went to Norie's fish and chips, "the best fish and chips in Oban" - it wasn't too bad. We shared haddock and calamari and chips.
